Get to know...Gaynor Arnold 🚴‍♀️

Always direct and to the point, Gaynor Arnold had a successful career in Mergers & Acquisitions - commuting from Surrey to London for over 18 years. Now the owner of her own boutique fitness studio in Guildford, Gaynor shares her journey from the trading floor to spin studio by way of a play cafe opened during maternity leave...

Tell us your story...

I'm originally from South Africa and have lived in Surrey for nearly 25 years. I worked in investment banking for 18 years, in Mergers and Acquisitions in The City.

What inspires you to do what you do?

I wanted to give something back to the community. That and I’m not very good at being a "stay at home mum."

What’s an ‘average’ day like for you?

There is no average day – usually involves self-inflicted chaos 😜

The biggest creative risk you’ve ever taken?

It's a close call between Opening ‘Fundays’, a craft and play cafe, when on maternity leave, and staring in 'The Deep Blue Sea' a play at the  Mill Studio in Guildford. When I set up 'Fundays' I knew absolutely nothing about craft, food or children! I was the only amateur in the cast of 'The Deep Blue Sea.' Everyone else was a professional actor.

I believe that taking risks makes you feel alive. I have very little fear of failure. If it goes wrong, you either lose money or face - and at the end of the day neither of those really matter in life.

Toast - warm or cold?

I don't eat bread. 😜

Coffee or tea?

Morning tea, mid-morning coffee, then vino, then peppermint tea.

Worst advice you’ve ever received?

All advice needs to be taken with a pinch a salt, shaken up and stirred, at the end of the day you have to make your own mistakes.

Best advice you’ve ever received?

Just be yourself. Whatever you do there will be some people who will find fault with you, so it makes more sense to be surrounded by people who are attracted for you being who you really are.

Favourite book?

The Forsyte Saga – an unexpected pleasure.

Favourite outdoor place to play/visit in Surrey?

A bench on the mount – it’s convenient and beautiful, I can just watch the world.

Independent business in Surrey you 💖💖💖?

Corkage and Olivo – I can drink like a fish and then go straight to Olivio's to eat #balance
