The Lean Startup is Eric Ries’s guide to testing an uncertain business idea before committing to the full build.
At a glance
Best for: Founders and independent workers testing an early idea or a new offer.
Not ideal for: Anyone seeking a ready-made service-business plan or evidence that every idea needs a software MVP.
Type: Resource
Cost: Paid book; price depends on format, country and retailer.
Commitment: Read, then design one small test around a consequential assumption.
Where: Print, ebook and audiobook editions.
The problem it helps you think through
An idea can consume time and money before you know whether the underlying problem matters to customers. Ries offers a way to separate assumptions from evidence and learn through shorter cycles of testing, measuring and adapting.
What you get
The book introduces minimum viable products, validated learning, the build-measure-learn cycle and the decision to persist or change direction. Its examples often come from technology products, but the question of what you need to learn applies to other offers too.
Put it to work
Write down one assumption your next investment depends on, such as whether a particular customer will pay for a solution. Spend 20 minutes designing the smallest respectful test that would produce useful evidence: a conversation, a pilot, a workshop or a paid first version. Decide in advance what response would change your plan.
Why it’s in the Directory
It is a counterweight to building the website, brand or complete programme before the most important assumption has been tested. The useful discipline is learning what people actually do, not collecting activity that feels like progress.
What it will not do
“Lean” does not mean rushed or poor work. A small test is only valuable if it examines the right question. You will need to translate the book’s technology examples to your market and exercise judgement about customers, claims and quality.
