How to conduct customer discovery interviews

Plan and run customer interviews that reveal a real problem, the events that make it important and how people currently try to solve it.

Published

If you do not know whether people really have the problem your idea is meant to solve, The Inspiration Space view is that polite enthusiasm will not settle it. Plan interviews around recent behaviour and what actually happens.

What you’ll have at the end

One clear customer assumption, a short interview plan, notes you can compare and a decision about what to test next.

Who it’s for

This is for you if you have an idea, early offer or possible customer problem, but not enough understanding to build or sell with confidence. Customer discovery is a learning conversation — not a disguised sales call, a usability test or a representative survey.

Before you start

Write one hypothesis: “We believe [type of person] experiences [problem] when [situation or trigger].” Then get ready to be wrong. Your job is to find evidence that supports, changes or disproves the idea.
