How to create a value proposition

Connect what one customer is trying to achieve with the parts of your offer that matter most, then identify the assumption you need to test.

Published

If you cannot explain why a particular customer should care, The Inspiration Space view is that the problem may not be the wording. Treat the value proposition as a hypothesis to test, not a sentence to polish in isolation.

What you’ll have at the end

A focused customer profile, a value map that earns its keep, the strongest connection between them and one important assumption to test next.

Who it’s for

This is for you if you have an idea, service or existing offer but cannot yet explain why a particular customer should care. You will end with a working hypothesis — useful, but not proof that anyone will buy.

Before you start

Choose one customer group in one specific situation. Gather interview notes, enquiries, sales conversations, support questions or behaviour you have observed. If something comes only from your own judgement, mark it HYPOTHESIS. This Guide uses Strategyzer’s Value Proposition Canvas: a customer profile and a value map.
